Support for the neonatal unit in Lomé

Support for the neonatal unit in Lomé

Every day between 30 and 40 babies are born there. Of these 16%, or some 200 babies each month, have a low birth weight and require hospitalisation. Unfortunately, the unit has a total capacity of only 24 beds.

To help alleviate the difficult conditions at this essential medical facility, the members of SI Club Lomé Aurore, in partnership with Soroptimists from the Swiss Club of Monthey-Chablais, have been supporting the neonatal unit through financial and in-kind donations. Since 2009 their support has helped to improve the care provided by doctors, to reduce the mortality rate of babies born with low birth weight by a third and to purchase an incubator as well as other much-needed medical equipment.

Each year, an impressive 200 babies and their mothers benefit from the project at this critical stage in their lives. They now have a much better chance of survival!
