Centenarian Soroptimist Maria de Lourdes Bettencourt, the Scientist Who Helped Egas Moniz Win the Nobel Prize

The Saturday edition of the Portuguese daily newspaper 23.02.2019 Diário De Notícias is almost sold out. On the front page, immediately catching our eyes, is 100 year old Maria de Lourdes. Still beautiful, in fantastic shape, and eloquent as ever, she was the founding President of the first Club in Portugal. She was invited by DN Newspaper to describe her career and her life. In 1944, when she started working in the multidisciplinary team of the psychiatric hospital Julio de Matos, Maria de Lourdes joined the research team of Doctor Egas Moniz along with psychiatrists and neurologists. At a time when most Portuguese women stayed at home, Maria de Lourdes was already standing up for women.
